Casa tradizionale in legno con i fiori ai balconi, Sappada Vecchia

Old Sappada

Old Sappada (Sappada Vecchia) is the part of the village that preserves houses and buildings in the traditional wooden architecture. It stretches along the sunniest, northern side of the valley, on the streets running parallel to the main road. Of the fifteen hamlets that make up Sappada, those of Old Sappada run from Mühlbach to Cima Sappada, and it is thanks to them that Sappada is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.

What to look out for

Here you can see the typical architecture of log beams interlocked at the corners on a stone base. The houses once combined living quarters and stable under one roof. Along the streets you will find mills and fountains, and signs of religious devotion: wayside chapels, crucifixes and small churches.

How to visit

The best way is on foot: a walk of about an hour from Mühlbach to Cima Sappada, among wooden houses and meadows. Along the way you will also find the Small Museum of the Great War and the farmhouse museum. More ideas on the Places to visit page.
