Lampione e Dolomiti a Sappada

Places to visit

Sappada is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy (Borghi più belli d’Italia) and holds the Touring Club’s Orange Flag. Here are the places not to miss, almost all within walking distance of the centre.

Nature

  • Sources of the Piave: at the foot of Monte Peralba, reached by car from Cima Sappada along the Val Sesis.
  • Cascatelle: in the Mühlbach hamlet, a path along the stream leads past a series of small waterfalls up to the last, larger one.
  • Orrido dell’Acquatona: a deep gorge carved by the Acquatona stream, which here drops 50 metres into the Piave. It is at the edge of the village towards Santo Stefano di Cadore.
  • Alpine wildlife park: in the Mühlbach hamlet, to see chamois in their natural habitat.

Museums

  • “Giuseppe Fontana” Ethnographic Museum, in Cima Sappada: objects and documents of Sappada’s life and culture. Information at plodn.info.
  • Small Museum of the Great War, in the Mühlbach hamlet near the Cascatelle trail: finds from the First World War in the mountains around Sappada. Open in summer, free entry.
  • Farmhouse museum, in the Cretta hamlet: a traditional wooden house preserved inside and out, showing how the people of Sappada used to live. Information at plodn.info.

Churches

  • Santa Margherita, the Baroque parish church from 1779 with fine frescoes, in Borgata Granvilla (a stone’s throw from our apartments).
  • Regina Pacis Sanctuary, a modern church built in the 1970s to fulfil a vow made during the Second World War, in the Soravia hamlet.
  • Sant’Osvaldo, the little alpine church of Cima Sappada, from 1732.
  • Il Calvario, the path climbing from the Mühlbach hamlet with thirteen small chapels and a little church, the fourteen Stations of the Cross.
